CAT Overview
CAT (Common Admission Test) is a national level management entrance examination, conducted every year by one of the IIMs (Indian Institute Of Management) in the country for admission to many courses under MBA (Master of Business Administration) and (PGDM) Post Graduate Diploma in Management. CAT is considered as one of the toughest entrance `examination and the candidates need to crack this entrance to get a seat in any of the prestigious management institutes in India. CAT 2016 was conducted by IIM Bangalore when nearly 2.32 lakh candidates appeared for the exam. But this year, CAT 2017 will be conducted by IIM Lucknow along with TCS as the testing partner. As CAT scores set the benchmark to be accepted by the IIMs, candidates need to arm themselves with the best tips and tricks to crack the exam in the shortest possible time.

Eligibility for CAT

  • The candidate must be a graduate with 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (45% in case of SC/ST/DA/PWD) or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the ministry of HRD, Government of India.
  • Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelor’s degree / equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed degree requirements and are awaiting results can also apply. Age : No age limit as long as you hold a bachelors degree from a recognized university


  1. Scheduled Caste – 15% of the total seats
  2. Scheduled Tribes – 7.5% of the total seats
  3. OBC (Non- Creamy layer) – 27% of the total seats
  4. Differently abled – 3.00%

CAT 2016 Exam Syllabus

CAT English/Verbal Ability: Reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, syllogisms, analogies, antonyms and synonyms, fill in the blanks, sentence correction, idioms, etc.

CAT Maths/Quant Ability: Number systems, geometry, trigonometry, probability, permutation combination, algebra, mensuration, time and work, averages, percentages, profit and loss, quadratic and linear equations, etc

CAT Data Interpretation: Interpretation and analysis of data based on text, tables, graphs (line, area), charts (column, bar, pie), venn diagram, etc.

CAT Logical Reasoning: Clocks, calendars, binary logic, seating arrangement, blood relations, logical sequence, assumption, premise, conclusion, linear and matrix arrangement, etc.

CAT is a computer based test, conducted in multiple cities during a window of 3-4 weeks. A candidate can select his / her test date and slot as per choice and availability.
